One of the most pressing issue concerning after a heart attack is the resumption of sexual intercourse. According to the Center for Cardiovascular Health, there are several people who suffered from heart attack are anxious in engaging to sex.

Moreover, most of them are worried of getting the second attack. Other times, they are preoccupied with thoughts of dying. Specialists quoted that having sex after the heart attack has low chances of getting another attack. Otherwise, they have underlying complications that can worsen the condition of the heart.

Partners of people suffered from heart attack are anxious, as well. They are afraid of traumatizing their wife/husband if they die during or after sexual intercourse. According to the specialists from Women’s Cardiac Center based in New York, they encountered several women who suffered from this condition are oblivious with the signs and symptoms of another attack.

Additionally, depression is often associated with heart attack. There are treatments used for heart attack that can predispose the users from this mental illness. Women have higher chance of suffering from depression after heart attack compared to men.

The most common reason which makes people suffered from depression due to this condition is the fear of avoiding sexual intercourse with their partner. This does not only affect their physiologic need but it can influence their emotional needs, as well. Relationship will be affected in some cases.

Other individual who had heart attack are ashamed of discussing this issue to their doctor. That is why most specialists provide health education regarding this matter especially to those with partner. The doctor usually offer alternative means to keep their clients who had heart attack to stay fit and ready for sexual intercourse.

Engaging with sex is also considered as a healthy form of exercise to people who suffered from heart attack.

Most of them are advised to resume sexual intercourse few weeks after the initial attack. Otherwise, they have suffered from more serious condition or undergone cardiac surgery (bypass graft or stent placements).

In 2010 study based on the Journal of Cardiology in America, they discussed about the implications of sex after heart attack. Specialists talked about the prognosis (chance of survival) when having sex few weeks after the attack is variably high.

Suffering from another attack is significantly low during and after sex. This simply tells everyone that engaging with sex after this condition is something that they don’t need to worry.

They considered sex as a physical exercise which is equivalent to ambulating up a flight of stairs. This is not an intense exercise that people believed. They don’t need to undergo the exercise stress test when engaging to sex. 

As long as they can manage walking up for a flight of stairs, it can definitely put them into safety limit when engaging to sex.

Furthermore, clients who suffered from heart attack who were able to walk on treadmill or performed a moderate exercises without difficulty of breathing or chest pain are indicated to resume sexual intercourse.

It is very important for people who suffered from heart attack to discuss this matter to their doctor. They don’t need to be ashamed of it because this is part of the physiologic needs.
