Home Care

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a condition that occurs when the heart fails to initiate its ability to pump blood. There are two types of CHF, the left side heart failure and the right side heart failure. It is considered as one of the most common form of heart diseases which requires medical attention. However, there are some simple ways that are feasible to treat this condition. These include self-care or home management recommendations.

When someone is diagnosed with congestive heart failure, they are usually in need of qualified cardiologist. People with CHF can do several things at home that enhance their comfort and minimize the risk of worsening the condition.

As a matter of fact, the more they become active in performing their daily routines, the better they can overcome the severity of their condition. Modifying the lifestyle practices will mark a better influence. This will not only make them become better but it enhances their opportunity to live a longer and healthier life.

Swelling of extremities is a sign of congestive heart failure. When someone has it, we recommend them to do the following self-care management:
  1. Elevate the legs and feet if these are swollen. Place 2 to 3 pillows under the legs while sleeping. This will enhance the venous return (blood flow in the lower extremities).
  2. Avoid ingesting foods which are high in sodium. As much as possible, they should not eat salty and dried foods. Check the nutritional label of the food for sodium because this macronutrient promotes water retention in the body.
  3. Daily monitoring of weight. It is advisable to measure the body weight before breakfast. Take note that when weighing, one should always wear the same clothes, weigh with the same scale at the same time. This will give them the most accurate result. Record the weight and show it to the medical doctor during consultation.
People with congestive heart failure must understand the things that they need to avoid in order for them to acquire the most optimal health condition. Avoiding of these activities will promote healthy lifestyle.
    1. Avoid taking over-the-counter (medications). They need to consult their medical doctor before taking drugs as part of the self-care management.
    2. Avoid smoking. Nicotine can cause constriction (narrowing) of the vessels which may alter the blood circulation.
    3. Minimize alcohol intake up to 1 drink per day unless someone is susceptible to alcoholism.
    4. Avoid too much stress and anxiety.
    5. Avoid taking of herbal medications and supplements. There are herbs that can cause cardiac problems. It is best to consult the medical doctor before taking any of these natural supplements.
Home care activities are very important for the alleviation of CHF signs and symptoms. Anyone with congestive heart failure must know and apply these activities for the sake of their well-being.
Walk regularly and perform aerobic exercise. It is advisable to engage with cardiac rehabilitation program. This form of program specifically monitors the capacity of the person to exercise.

Monitoring of blood pressure can help assess their condition. They need to know the normal blood pressure (BP) according to their age. It is best for them to acknowledge the means on how to check the BP at home.

People who suffer from CHF associated with Diabetes Mellitus should monitor their blood sugar level. They also need to check their HbA1C level, as well. It must be lesser than 6.5% to 7%.

Anyone with CHF secondary to elevated lipid profile should consult their doctor on how to monitor the cholesterol level. Make sure to reduce the LDL (low density lipoprotein) up to 70 and raise the HDL (high density lipoprotein) up to 150 – By Edterchelle Soriano
