Aspirin Benefits Treating Heart Diseases
Aspirin is a drug used to treat myocardial infarction. It belongs to NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) which works to minimize the inflammation and pain. Recently, this drug is used to prevent and treat heart diseases.
Diseases of the heart which includes CVA (Stroke), peripheral artery disease (Insufficient blood supply to the lower extremities such as leg), and MI (Heart Attack) are the leading causes of death in America. Over 900,000 deaths are recorded each year (2011 statistics – U.S. CDC)
Based on the clinical research and studies,aspirin can contribute several benefits to people who have these cases:
Every individual who suffered from heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke. People who undergone surgical operations such as bypass graft and stents are recommended to use this medication, as well. People who suffered from angina pectoris (chest pain) are prescribed to take aspirin;
Women and men who are not manifesting any clinical signs and symptoms of heart diseases but are diagnosed to have higher susceptibility for heart problems. For instance, endocrine problem (Diabetes Mellitus) and other lifestyle-related risk factors.
The Aspirin’s mechanism of action works on different aspects. If the aspirin is taken on low doses, it can help prevent the clumping of platelets. If the drug is taken on medium doses, it can work to relieve the pain. If the medication is taken on large doses, it can provide anti-inflammatory effects.
For your information, platelets are micro (small) cell fragments that are found in the blood. Its primary role is to perform blood clotting. However, in some cases where platelet counts is too minimal, it can cause bleeding. The work of aspirin is to prevent the development of blood clots.
People with coronary heart disease have platelets that are clumping in the narrowed arteries. This can cause to the accumulation of blood clot in the artery. The blood clots are stuck inside the artery and this can block the circulation of the blood.
Blocked arteries can impede the blood supply to other vital organs in the body. For instance, the brain is constantly dependent to blood supply. In special cases where the brain fails to receive enough blood, this can lead to the development of cerebral anoxia (poor oxygen supply to the brain) and eventually, it may lead to CVA (stroke).
Below are the common complications that can occur due to insufficient blood supply:
If the arteries that provide oxygen and blood to the heart are blocked, it can result into chest pain. If this condition remains on longer period of time, it can lead to critical heart disease (myocardial infarction – heart attack);
Myocardial Infarction
If the brain receives insufficient oxygen and blood, it can lead to the development of TIA (transient ischemic attack). If the condition remains on longer period of time, it will lead to more serious case, CVA (stroke).
Insufficient blood supply to the kidney can alter its filtration process. Poor blood and oxygen supply to the renal cavity due to blood clots in the artery can cause renal failure.
Aspirin provides therapeutic effect to the users. However, there are few cases wherein this drug is considered as one of the harmful medicines.
Too much consumption of aspirin can lead to nominal bleeding (hemorrhage).
It is best to consult the doctor (cardiologist) before using this medicine.This is to help identify the specific dosage, timing and considerations because it helps prevent the occurrence of possible harmful adverse reactions (overdose) -By Edterchelle Soriano
