Beta blocker is one of the most effective pharmaceutical treatments for hypertension. It is commonly prescribed by the medical doctors to people with high blood pressure. Moreover, there are special considerations that they need to understand before taking the drug. This goes with the dosage, route of administration and interaction of the drug to other oral medications taken by the users.
Below are the common side effects (adverse reactions) of beta blockers:
  1. Lightheadedness (dizziness)
  2. Fatigability (excessive tiredness)
  3. Blurring of vision
  4. Cold feet and hands
  5. Slow heart rate (below 60 beats per minute)
  6. Nausea and diarrhea (watery stool)
However, there are side effects that can affect the neurological (nervous system) of the users. It has lesser effects but if the drug is consumed for more than what is prescribed, this will lead to serious problems.
  1. Poor sleeping pattern (insomnia)
  2. Loss of libido (lack of sex drive)
  3. Mental problem (depression)
  4. For male users, it can cause impotence (inability to maintain an erection)
When an individual is taking beta blockers, they need to observe proper precautionary measures especially when driving. This is very critical because the medication can cause lightheadedness. It is best for everyone to have someone drive the car in cases that they need to go out and use the auto. This will prevent them from possible accidents.
Before taking this type of anti-hypertensive drug, your medical doctor should be aware of your current health state. The purpose for this is for your doctor to properly assess the type and amount of dosage for your maintenance. Moreover, there are other special considerations that you need to understand when taking this drug. These are:
  1. You need to avoid using beta-blockers if you have history of Asthma. Anything that blocks the airway is not allowed to take this drug. Otherwise, the medical doctor had thoroughly assessed your current condition.
  2. You should not take beta-blockers if you have history of heart block. Heart block is a condition wherein your heart produces irregular or slow heart rates.
  3. Avoid using beta-blockers if you are diagnosed to have heart failure. However, there are doctors who prescribe this drug for treating heart failure. Furthermore, it is best for you to consult your doctor before taking it.
  4. If you have severe peripheral arterial disease (poor blood supply to the upper and lower extremities), consult your doctor. Beta-blockers can worsen the condition.
Beta-blockers have no undesirable effect to lactating or pregnant mothers. Most general practitioners are prescribing this medication for pregnant mothers. However, you really need to consult your medical doctor in cases that you are breastfeeding the baby.
Additionally, beta-blockers should not be stopped in a sudden manner. Suddenly stopping of this medication can worsen the condition. You can’t just adjust the dosage on your own. You need to inform your doctor in case that you are not feeling well or not responding properly from the prescribed treatment (dosage).
In special cases that the users have diabetes mellitus, bradycardia (low heart rate – below 60 beats per minute), hypotension (low blood pressure) and high level of acid in the blood, they need to take the medication with special precaution. Ask the doctor and inform them about these underlying conditions. It will help you avoid further complications of any heart diseases.
Taking of beta-blockers is not recommended for people who are using drugs that can help maintain erection (treatment for erectile dysfunction). This type of antihypertensive can interact with the drug such as Viagra and may cause severe crisis in relation to their blood pressure.
